History of COGS

The birth of COGS was indeed a much awaited event in the medical and academic circles of Coimbatore.

We remember in gratitude the senior Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of yesteryears who laid the foundation of our speciality with the setting up of institutions delivering standard care, extending across the urban heart land of Coimbatore.

The nucleus of COGS was at Coimbatore Medical College and with the sincere efforts of Dr.A.Seeniammal, one of the doyens among the obstetricians of  Coimbatore, this Society was started in 1980. The first President of the Society was Late. Dr.C.P.Vani who set an example for the successors by serving an exemplary first term. From then on the Society has grown from a handful of members to the present strength of over 350 active members. The Society was registered in the year 1993 and the same year the bylaws of the Society were framed.

The COGS community is spread across not only the city of Coimbatore but also the neighbouring towns of Tiruppur, Ooty, Coonoor, Pollachi and Udumalpet. Over the years, the activities of the Society have diversified from monthly clinical meetings to Workshops in state-of-the-art technology, Conferences and Scientific Forums with International faculty and health camps.

The Society is proud of its dynamic and learned members who have been invited to deliver guest lectures and chair National and International meets. A number of eminent Professors and dedicated members of the teaching profession form a part of this Society.

The AICOG 1994 conducted  at PSGIMSR was the maiden venture and a memorable one for the Society. It was followed by ISAR National Conference at Ooty in 2002, DAKSHIN in 2004, YUVA FOGSI and Star Endogyn Conclave in 2019 to name a few.

The Society has played a pivotal role in establishing cordial relations among its Members and with professional colleagues across the country and abroad.

With the advent of social media networking, the members of COGS were connected initially with the help of two WhatsApp groups-COGS Learn and COGS Connect. With the Society membership crossing 350 and still growing in strength, we migrated to Telegram to enable inclusion of more participants. Currently we have the “COGS Learn” group for academic discussions and “COGS Connect” for non-academic deliberations in TELEGRAM App.

Another step forward in advancing our quest for knowledge, was the introduction of the COGS Newsletter. With a group of brilliant scientific minds at the helm and with valuable contributions from enthusiastic members we have brought out two editions till date . The year of the pandemic has shown us the way ahead with virtual sharing of knowledge-we hope to add to this with the launch of our new website www.cogs.co.in in 2020 to help us connect and coordinate better in the years to come.

The vision of COGS is to reach  the height of  excellence in all our endeavours. However quoting Robert Frost, we have “Miles to go before we sleep”!

We, as the members of this Society rededicate ourselves to the cause of women in distress with disease and debility. We vow to alleviate their suffering with the help of evidence based medical care-combining scientific knowledge with compassion. We are also committed to spreading the light of knowledge to fellow medical professionals.

COGS reaches out to all its members to walk hand in hand as we strive to realise our goals for the future – Come let us Serve , Learn and  Grow together!
